Plus x pts per game. X=the gap between the two players on the ladder. X can only be awarded to the person starting at the lower rung.
Example 1... Scoring Points
Pete (5th rung) challenges Danny (2nd rung) during the first week of play. Pete wins (hard to believe I know!) Danny would earn 1 pt for the lose. Pete would earn 2pts (for the win)+3pts (for the rung differential). Then the ladder becomes rearranged.

2nd Danny 5pts
3rd Steve 4pts
4th Cory 3pts
5th Pete 1pts
6th Rory 0pts
Using the scores from Example 1 here's how the ladder would change.

Do we actually need points values for the weeks? It seems to me that as long as the players agree, there isn't any difference. I don't think anyone will begrudge playing a smaller game with newer players or players that just have smaller armies.
just a thought.
