Theatre of War campaign discussion.

Hey all!

Here's the link to the Theater of War campaign that ran back in 2007:

http://www.wkks.org/bill/warmachine/thornwood/

Be wary of the pdf links, I'm leaving the pages as they died. Wink

I mis-remembered having a bunch of rules for the campaign made up. If I recall correctly (NOW!), we just played it as detailed in Apotheosis with a couple of minor tweaks. The detailed stuff was for the League that ran later.

One tweak was lowering the detachment size so players with only a box and a few figs could play. I don't see that as a problem now and may help with some of the scenario issues. I'll look and see if I have some dead tree materials that I forgot about.

In the meantime, discuss. Smile

Ah, those were the days...

I need to review Apotheosis and the TOW rules.  Anyone out there that doesn't have Apotheosis, have no fear.  I'll bring my copy in with my stuff on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

I think we should take an inventory of who plays what and a rough estimate of how much they can field.

I have:
Cygnar 2500 points
Trollbloods 2500 points
Khador 500 points
Protectorate 750 points
Mercenaries 2000 points
Everblight 2000 points
Circle 1000 points

I am really looking forward to this.

Yes, after talking about this tonight with you guys I'm really excited to try this.  It would be fun to see how the different factions fare in a long running campaign.

I should be able to field a comfortable 750 points of Cryx.  I haven't had a chance to play a larger game yet so it'll be a learning curve for me, but it should be alot of fun. Hopefully in the next few months I'll be able to put it up to around 1k of well-mixed stuff.

Some more material I recovered from the trove.

The Rules Glossary:

featuring the infamous 'Bill Hill' and 'Sudden Death Caster Kill'.

The Forward Position scenario:

DarkKnightRising

i've got enough for a list of Khador 500pts and Cryx 500pts-ish.

Theater of War calls for detachment sizes of 750 pts and 1000 pt games are possible.

One creates three detachments, though that does NOT mean one needs 2250 pt in figs!  Smile

I do seem to recall two detachments could be used on some occasions. The detachments serve as a pool for the list used in the actual games, which could vary in size.
Groomie

I think before we reduced the size of the detachments to 500 each, but left the size of game up to the players, with 500 being the minimum.  That way you could play larger games if you want.

Before we go forward, we should decide if we want to build 750 Detachments or 500 Detachments.

I vote 500, mostly due to the fact that everyone can field at least 500 points, but not everyone can field 750.
kael

At 500 points, how do you propose to handle the scenario problems?

My opinion was they were designed for larger armies (ie Khador and the Buildings That Must Die).

Wasn't there another TOW published, Suul or something? Could look at that as well.

It's from Evolution, which I haven't picked up yet (Jeeeeerooooodd, I'm nnnnnneeeding suuumting!)

Just got done looking over Thornwood  to refresh my memory.

Scenario problem, Khador, Break the Blockade:
The guard towers take 80 damage ( at ARM 18 )  to destroy and there are three of them. That seems just wrong UNLESS playing 1000 pts.

I do think part of the deal is planning for the Strategic Objective scenarios, I don't think they are intended to be won by a generic list.
Groomie

I agree about the Objective Scenarios.  I vote we build our detachments at 750 and allow playing at lower values, minimum of 350.  That way, when someone does want to play a larger game, the detachments are at the right points values, and if needed, we could do those missions as team missions.

The next thing to consider would be who is playing what factions?
Groomie

I decided to post a sample Detachment to illustrate how this will work.  Here is a list of three detachments.

Cygnar Detachment 1 (750 Points)
Lord Commander Stryker
Lancer
Thunderhead
Captain Arlan Strangeways
Gun Mage Captain Adept
Journeyman Warcaster
3 Stormsmiths
3 Storm Lances
Storm Blades with Unit Attachment
Eiryss
Gorman Di Wulfe
Rupert Carvolo

Cygnar Detachment 2 (750 points)
Lt. Allister Caine
Ironclad
Lancer
Sentinel
Captain Maxwell Finn
Gun Mage Captain Adept
Journeyman Warcaster
Arcane Tempest Gun Mages
10 Long Gunners with Unit Attachment
First Mate Hawk
Ogrun Bokur
Lady Aiyana and Master Holt

Cygnar Detachment 3 (750 points)
Commander Adept Nemo
Centurion
Lancer
Ironclad
Gun Mage Captain Adept
Journeyman Warcaster
3 Stormsmiths
3 Storm Lances
Storm Blades with Unit Attachment
6 Stormguard

How this works in the campaign:
You and your opponent agree to a points value for your game.  The challenger (I believe) gets to set the value.  You play with a detachment and if the game is larger than your detachment, you can dip into a second (or third).  Obviously I couldn't play Epic Stryker unless the game was 750.  I can't duplicate Warcasters or Unique Models (e.g. Captain Finn, Thunderhead) between detachments.  In the examples above I could use the same Ironclad or unit of storm blades, unless the game was very large.  I hope this helps with setting up your detachments.

This isn't the detachments I'll be using, by the way.  Not even sure I'll play Cygnar yet.
Groomie

Bill, Chris K, Rob H, and I were talking about the Theater of War Campaign tonight.  Right now, we have at least four solid players with possibly up to 7.  I think that we should look at starting with what we have, and letting anyone who wants to jump in later join an established player as a team.

That being said, here is what we have:

Chris K: Khador
Rob H: Cryx
Bill C: Cryx
Groomie: Cygnar

I was thinking that with the duplicitous nature of the Cryx Faction, we could have them play against each other and have one of them play with the Protectorate territories.  If we get a POM player, they can join that team.

If we go ahead and start, this way of doing things allows us to add other players of varying degrees of commitment down the line.  It has some aspects of the Escalation Leagues that way while still advancing a campaign at the same time.

I propose that we meet next Tuesday, either at the store or at Village Inn to discuss this further.  If we meet at Village Inn, I will buy pie for everyone who attends.  No joke.

You should talk to Roger & Larry. Roger was a workhorse in the first campaign & I would think he would like to finish one out!
Tweak

I would be up for a campaign.  Though yes I am one of those silly college kids who only show up every tuesday for the leage so far.  I could even talk to the others and see how many we get.
I have
Cryx 2447pts
Trollbloods 1787pts
