Planetary Empires - Season 1 - Rules adjustments

Hey all,

There are a few problems with completely adapting the "Mighty Empires" rules for 40k.

1. The option "Elite Army" allows one to take as many Special choices as they want for Warhammer Fantasy Battles. For 40k this should be adjusted to "as many Elite choices as they want".

2. Since there aren't varying degrees of victory in 40k, the scale for earning empire points should be this:

1 point - Loss
2 points - Draw
3 points - Victory

The difference is that no one can earn 4 empire points by a "massacre". All that really means is that the season _might_ last a little longer.

Anyone else have any other suggestions?

When are we going to start?

These rules sound good to me.
If we're going to keep it that way, we need to figure out how many points tiles and things are going to cost to reflect earning to few points for a victory.

With the scoring as you suggest, the season will take almost twice as long, since you can only take one tile per turn this way.  I would suggest either using victory points (I believe there is a chart in the book) or scoring like this:

Loss: 1
Draw: 3
Win: 5

This will motivate players to win, as a draw is almost as good as a win right now.

I don't have the chart in front of me but doesn't one only ever earn 5 points for a "massacre"?

That would mean the season would be shorter than normal. How about 2 for a draw and 4 for a victory?
Jake

Why not make up our own conditions for a massacre.  Maybe we could do something like:
1. Destroy all opposing troops and HQ choices in addition to winning the game.        2. Control twice as many objectives as your opponent with a minimum of 2.
3. End the game with twice the points remaining on the board as your opponent (minimum 800)
4. Keep all of your scoring units alive while destroying all of your opponents.

These are just some random ideas we came up with.  I haven't seen the official rules for a massacre in fantasy but I'm sure we can come up with something that is similar in difficulty.

Pete:  What constitutes a "massacre" in Fantasy Battle has no impact on this league.

Jake:  WFB uses victory points to determine a winner.  The margin of victory determines the type of victory:  Loss, Draw, Narrow Victory, Solid Victory, or Massacre.  In Mighty Empires each type has a point value: Loss = 1, Draw = 2, NV = 3, SV = 4, M = 5.  There isn't a way to recreate that in WH40K without going to a pure Victory Points scale.  If you wanted to, you could just use the scale from the back of the WFB book.  There is a store copy to consult if you like.

There are only three victory types in WH40K:  Win, Loss, or Draw.  If you go with your suggested formula you have a much longer season.  If you go with the one I suggested, you will have a more manageable season length.

I don't think that creating a chart to determine what constitutes a massacre is necessary or something that is easily balanced.  It is much harder to destroy the units that Jake described in some armies than in others.  Empire points should be contingent only on the game result, as they are in Mighty Empires.  They shouldn't be contingent on specific events inside a game.

Plus, the 1-3-5 formula is pretty easy to remember.

As I have already stated in the 1-2-3 format, there is less of a reward for winning outright, as the cost of taking a tile is normally two points.  The 1-3-5 format allows for winners to gain ground every round, and should keep the field more balanced between rounds.
