I started playing the game back during the Clan Wars story leading to the crowning of Emporer Tortui I. I continue foolowing the story, but otherwise been out of the loop. I am thinking of returning to the game, however I don't know what sets are legal, and if none of my stuff is then where is a good starting point for a returning player with limited resources.

The currently legal sets are:

Khan's Defiance
The Truest Test
Samurai Edition (the current base set)
Stronger than Steel
Honor's Veil

As well as a special direct-to-player set of cards called The Emerald and Jade Champions set.

There are certainly some older cards that have been reprinted for Samurai Edition, and the older printings of them are perfectly legal (they are played by the wording on the most recent printing or MPR, and you can find updated card text at L5R Search).

The best place to start is to pick up a starter from the Samurai Edition base set. Base set starters will have two of the clan's Strongholds and some other starter-only cards for your clan. If you are a Phoenix player as your nickname suggests, you'll probably want to grab the Phoenix starter out of the Stronger than Steel as well.

Khan's Defiance would be the best set to grab if you can find it, but since it's the oldest of the currently legal sets and due to the myriad of high-power cards in it, it is becoming hard to find.

I'm up in the Waterloo area, so I might not be able to speak for the guys around Critical Hit, but I suspect many if not all of them would be willing to give you a hand with starting back up.

Hey chris, if you're interested in Phoenix, we might be able to work something out. I have, literally, a playset of every single legal peep, all the legal strongholds, the holdings and the action that come with the Phoenix starter, and I have yet to use them. Let me know and we can talk about working something out for trade. They're just sitting around taking up space while I work with the sub-par unicorn and lion clans that AEG seems to want to kill off with every new set.... oh and being busy bitching about said hate on a regular basis.

Just cutting things back to two clans I'm thinking.

As for actions, holdings and whatnot, there are about close to 1k cards in the back room that I left there at CHG for whoever wants/needs them, and I'll have a ton more after tomorrow, so if you're looking to get back into the swing of things that should get you pretty well starter with commons and uncommons. The rares are another ballgame altogether.

I'll never knock buying packs from Jerod as I do so myself often and in quantity. If you're looking for singles hit up any of us, we're always willing to trade. Two other places you might look if you want specific singles besides ebay are:

I only put them here because Jerod doesn't sell singles so I'm not cutting in on his market... I'm all about supporting the local store. Doc tends to be a bit pricier depending on the cards you're looking for, and Kishos tends to be cheaper but not have quite the stock Doc does. There's also L5Rshop.com, but they tend to be a heck of a lot more expensive.

I think atm I'm sitting on about 500 samurai legal rares and adding another 150 out of HV tomorrow. And me... I'm always willing to trade for other rares and/or packs.

Oh... as for the Khan's Defiance thing... if... and that's a BIIIIIIG if.... you can find a booster box online it'll run you minimum of $200... yes, the cards are that good. On a box you can make your money back with selling about 8-10 of the rares.

Governor's Court = 25
Doomed Intentions = 30-35
Flash of Steel = 20
Seiden Sanzo = 20

and that's just the top 4.

I found two boxes of starters and bought them for $40 a pop (got lucky). Right now though, literally everyone has cleaned everything out. If anyone is still holding any they're keeping it tucked away very safelike and not selling them.. and AEG won't be reprinting them... just too damned powerful.

Do any of you guys know where I could find a Stronger the Steel Phoenix starter deck. Jerod said he wasn't going to order anymore of the STS starters and currently I only have the Samurai Ed starter and a booster pack. I'm also going thru all of my old cards to see what is legal.

Hey, I have all of the commons and uncommons for you, and many of the rares. I'll bring them with me to the store tomorrow. Also, the Strongholds, the holdings, clan armor, the new clan champion from Honor's Veil. Just come in tomorrow and I'll hook you up. Oh, the fixed cards from the Phoenix starter are in there as well. Shouldn't be a need to buy one.

For return, honestly, don't worry about it.

As for what time we'll be there, there's a Katana tourney starting at 2 so Seth and I should arrive around 1:30. Going to grab some IHOP first. We'll probably be there for 5-6 hours. Bout how long the tourney should take.

Hey guys. I haven't disappeared, I unfortunately have been very busy lately. Between work and watching my daughter my Saturdays of late have been rather full. I hope to finally make a Saturday here soon as work is starting to slow down. I have been deck building in my spare time though so I'll be ready to go as soon as I have some down time.
