I dont understand the point of any unit having a ballistic score of higher than 5 since, from my understanding, that even with a 7 BS you still only have a 2+. i am curious about this since both 5, and 7 are 2+ and say shooting at long range infers a -1 to hit so a BS 7 is highly ineffectual compared to a BS 5 due to the fact that they will both only be able to hit on a 3+ and the BS 7 costs much more than the BS 5.

I am just not sure why i would ever want to waste the points on a BS higher than 5 if it does nothing other than look pretty.

what about things that give minus' to hit - say the mark of nurgle which is a minus 1 to hit - 5 BS now hits on a 3, 7 BS hits still on a 2

The difference between a 5 and 7 is that the seven hits on a 2 if you're at -2 to hit.. A 5 BS would being rolling for a 4 if the attack was -2. Anytime you have a negative to hit when shooting subtract that number from your BS and that will give you your target number. 1's always miss and there are rules for rolling a 7-10 just after the BS section of the core book.
