Deathwing

So some of you know that the reason I got into 40k in the first place a long long time ago was because of one unit.. Terminators.

The story begins like this: Around the time I was about 11, I was visiting a friend who's older brother played a new miniatures wargame called Warhammer 40,000. Since my friends family was fairly wealthy, he had a whole table full of new metal miniatures that he was painting, and the batch he was working on was a squad of Deathwing Terminators. I was very curious about these little miniatures depicting space marines of the future in heavy power armor, they looked awesome. When I asked about them he began to explain their very rich background and mentioned another game called "Space Hulk". He showed me how to play 40k very briefly and explained some of the fundamentals of the game that are still in place today such as squad cohesion (which was a strange concept for me at the time).

Fast forward a few years, I had bought the original RTB01 space marine box set that summer when I was introduced to the game and painted up my first 20 marines (to look like star wars storm troopers). I had put the marines away in a box since I couldn't find anyone else to play with in my small town, it turned out my friends older brother wasn't really interested in playing as much as painting the miniatures (also, I was his kid brother's friend). However, there was to be a new computer game based on Space Hulk coming out and I was incredibly excited to get my hands on it. When I finally got the Electronic Arts computer game, I played it a ton and loved it. I thought about how cool it would be to able to afford to play 40k with a whole army made out of these alien-slaying badasses: Deathwing Terminators.

Now, many many painted marines and tyranids later I am finally able to afford to make the Deathwing Terminator army that I originally wanted to field so many years ago due to the inexpensive Assault on Black Reach box set.

My current army list looks like this:
-4 x 5 man Deathwing Terminator squads. 3 Assault Cannons, 1 Cyclone, 1 Chain Fist.

-Belial, Master of the Deathwing (who allows me to take terminators as troops).

-3 x Dreadnoughts. 2 w/ Twin Autocannons and Missile Launcher, 1 with Assault Cannon and DCCW/stormbolter. These are my main AT firepower.

This 24 model list comes in at 1500 points.

I'm waiting on a trade to complete with someone to get the rest of my terminators, and I bought the Forgeworld Twin Autocannon upgrade for my dreadnoughts. Once those all arrive, I'm really excited to break out the army I've wanted to play for 20 years. I hope it lives up to my expectations.

Very nice pete!  I dig the color scheme.

I gotta say Pete, those are some nice looking figs.  I'm repainting my Deathwing right now and it doesn't look half as good.  It's ok though cause anything beats the paint job they had before.  Anyway, I digress.  Great looking termies man.

Total crap.

I can't bring myself to say "JK" or "Just Kidding!" like Sampers would, but I have to say that I do like what I see, all sarcasm aside.  Did you use the Menoth Base and Highlight that I suggested?

Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

I started with a white primer basecoat, then washed the entire model with the new Griffon Sepia wash. Then I dry-brushed with the Menoth White that Steve suggested. It was great because it cut out at least two steps in the typical Deathwing painting process as suggested by anyone using strictly Citadel paints (skull white and bleached bone).

I usually go back and clean up the drybrushing with more of the Sepia wash and then do the rest of the models details (guns, eyes, icons, etc.). A final touchup of Menoth White highlights to clean up any mistakes and make some of the cleaner parts of the armor more solid is the last thing I do before I put on the decals (which can't be seen very well in these pictures).

I found a site that had printable decals for the Deathwing, so I bought some laser printer decal paper and printed off a sheet.

I'm working on the 2nd squad now and then I'm going to paint Belial (or "captain useless" as he's sometimes referred to). After that, squad III and I'll have 1000 points completed.
