annihilation missions

People pretty much agree that the rules for scoring annihilation missions are broken.  The normal fix suggested has been to alter the points.  What if instead, all annihilation missions were required to last the full 7 turns?  That would give you plenty of time for one side to get wiped out.  If there are survivors left on both sides, they wouldn't be very many, and the rules as written would be fine.  What do people think of that?

I've got a better solution.  Don't play annihilation missions.  Wink

7 turns - too long.

The annihilation mission scoring sucks imo.  I have a high kill point army and despite killing more of the enemy in terms of cost, I lose big time due to kill points.

We had a whole thread dedicated to this discussion.

I recommend the above solution or use Victory Points.

I came up with a solution in my mission generator.  Simply award kill points as normal but also add in the number of units you have left at the end of the game.  This encourages you to fight, but to also preserve your forces and makes armies that have more kill points a lot more competitive.

Another option would be to institute a sliding scale, or use victory points.

I really like your solution, Groomie.  Has anyone had a chance to playtest that yet?  I think there would still be some advantage to having fewer units in your army, but not as great as before.  That's fair, since having more units is an advantage in the other two scenarios.  It also seems more fun to me than adding up the costs of each unit destroyed.

The few times that I have played an annihilation mission.. i have won.  For Orks, that mission choice is like cheat mode (in my experience).  Now... I do agree that it is the least fun of the missions.  After reading Groom's mission options, I feel that he has a great spin on it that would make it more enjoyable for both players (regardless the army they fielded).  Victory points would be fine too...

What style of ork army do you play?  I play orks, and I almost always have more units than my opponent.
