40K CHG League (run just like bloodbowl)There is a sign-up sheet at the store. There will be a $5 entry fee to purchase a trophy that we can track the winners on!
You may play any army you want any week. However, you and your opponent must choose point value before you roll on the scenario table. Depending on how many people sign up demarks how many weeks this will run!

I'm curious. What is it that could be done to get people to actually play 40k? There are a lot of people with armies, why is it that no one will play? If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them. This league is now the 3rd thing in a row that Jared has tried to get going for 40k. First the escalation league, which i think had a total of maybe 6-7 games played. Next was the campaign idea, which never really took off. Now this, with a whole 3 signups. Whats up?

Well, I can tell you the ebb and flow of 40k in Iowa City.
At various times there has been a LOT of 40k happening in the store. I think the move to the temporary IC location has meant that a lot of people feel it's too far to come in to play. Coralville is very centralized for a lot of people.
There is a new edition of the rules. This means that there are new people interested with lots of new mini's to play with. These are people we could get into the game. How to do this? Run VERY small games so that people can play with what they bought. These can be "demo" games or the games right out of the new Assault on Black Reach book.
The new edition of the rules has also scared some older players away (groomie). I predict that these players will come back after a time, but for now they are still soaking in all the changes. I have been a long-time player and I'm just taking a little break to build my new Deathwing army and focus on other games. I'll be back.
A combination of factors has led to the current situation IMO. CHG has done a good job of providing the space for us to play and offering to run leagues in the store. I think that as veteran players, the best thing we can do is make beautiful terrain and beatifully painted armies, be available to play, and help those who are interested in getting into the game with the new box set play some games.

"Withdrawal in disgust is not the same as apathy."
-Richard Linklater
I had written an entire essay on why I don't play this game anymore. I have chosen instead to respond to the idea that I am "scared off" by the current rules edition.
I am not scared of this edition. I have won or drawn the majority of games that I have played in 5th Edition. I have taken the time to review the rules of the game with the experience of playing the game, and I am less than impressed. Therefore, I am withdrawing in disgust.
I am still more than happy to advise people on what to play, how to play, how to paint and model their figs and advise on the creation of terrain.
As to the lack of play, well, that can be attributed to many things. There are at least four long time players that no longer find 40k appealing. Those players (including myself) no longer play on a regular basis or aren't interested in a league or campaign. One of those players is committed to divesting himself of his 40k collection (not me). When you take into consideration that there were only about 9 to 12 irregular players to begin with you can understand the current slowdown of play. In addition, some 40k players are currently playing other games, such as Warmachine and Hordes. I myself have taken up a new game to replace 40k.
I find that escalation leagues are the best way to get new people involved. Combat Patrol is a great way to get people painting and collecting. It also stresses good tactics which translates to better play at higher points values. The store currently has a Rogue Trader Tournament scheduled later this year. I would suggest contacting the guys in the Quad Cities and try to get together with them both here and in the Quads to promote visting players.
Apocalypse is also a great format for play, as anyone can bring whatever they have and get to play for a day or so. The second table will be in the store soon, and that means there will be more playing area.
The best way to ensure games are played is to set up a game in advance. It can be very frustrating to hang out at the store on a random day and no one comes in. Scheduling should be done so that conflicts with other games doesn't occur. CHG has a great on line schedule posted on the store site.
Another great incentive is prizes. GW will not send prize support for your league. Very early on, I ran a Combat Patrol Tournament at the store. We had about 5 people, and I gave out a $20 and a $10 gift certificate to CHG as prizes for the winner and the best sport. I paid that money out of my pocket, and I did it gladly. It generated enough initial interest that we were able to start a challenge board that skyrocketed to close to 20 players in only a few weeks. If you really care about getting more players, then one or two of you should get together and pony up some cash for a prize or two. It sounds silly, but it feels really good to give away prizes to players, especially new ones. If shelling out $20 is a problem, charge players to get in but give all the money charged back as prizes. Ask long time players for items they might want to donate for prize support.
The bottom line is that it starts with the passionate players. If you really love the game, that should be the only motivation you need. CHG shouldn't be the initiator of all this, the playerbase should be. Jerod is great at getting things set up, but he is also great about utilizing feedback. Be proactive.
Here endeth the lesson.

You do realize that there are now scenarios or games in the Assault on Black Reach Box, right? The box contains the figs, the mini rulebook, and an "Assault on Black Reach" book that is basically just an advertisement.
While a great value in terms of price, there aren't any introductory scenarios or games in the box.

The latest White Dwarf includes an entire campaign for use with the Black Reach box set.

Too bad they couldn't include it for free in the Black Reach Box set. This thread is deviating from the original post. I think my advice regarding generating interest in 40k is solid, and I hope you guys do well. Gaming in any form, even filthy Magic, is good for the community and the store that houses it.

I just signed up today. i suspect i will probably get added to the roster uh... soon? I play Imperial armies- marines and guard. Anyone who plays me should expect a fun game- I'm not competitive. I should be able to play most saturdays and sundays.

Tom VS Nick S = Tie. The Imperial Guard managed to inflict enough causalities on the mighty Space Marines to bring the fighting to a stalemate.
