PnP only. I've had the MegaMek software on my PC for a while, but I've just never gotten around to sitting down and figuring out how to use it, though I do appreciate how well implemented it appears to be.

Yeah, same here.  Nothing beats PnP, but blowing up a bot in megamek in my downtime at work is fun, too.

How easy is it to learn how to use MM? I did know that you could set up bots, and I'd like to give that a try, but I just don't have a good sense of how easy it is to jump into. My knowledge of the rules is ... decent, so it'd be mostly a question of the software, I think.

It's a free download. It installs and runs easily IMO.

Here's a link:

Oh, I have it, or a version of it. I've just never gotten around to messing with it much. But maybe I'll be motivated now.  Very Happy

Whats MegaMek?  I would also like to know more about Battletech.

What kind of game is it?

How difficult is it to learn?

Is there a good background?

Sorry if this is off topic.

It's 100% on-topic, but, like I said, I haven't tried it. Try the link above and see. You should be able to install the software from there if you want. It's designed to let you play Classic BattleTech over the Internet, but you can also play against "bots."

Hmm. I keep getting "thrown out" when I try to download the latest version. Does one have to be registered with SourceForge now to download? Whenever I click on any of the download links for MM, I'm tossed to the home page.

Oh, and as to what BattleTech is: it's a game of giant fighty robots. And, yes, there's an extensive universe for it--the game's been around for over twenty years. Take a look at http://www.classicbattletech.com/ There's lots of free stuff, demo and otherwise. The "Leap into the Action" page should give you some helpful links. In its quick-start form, BattleTech is fairly simple. At the high end, there are a lot of rules, but how many you use depends on what units you're using, etc. One nice thing about CBT is that there's now a good, "staged" way to get into the game, from quick-start to introductory to the main rules to advanced rules.

It is indeed a giant-fighty-robot game set a thousand years in the future. You may recall the "Mechwarrior" series of games for various consoles and computers. These are all based on the Battletech universe. While Megamek is a faithful reproduction of the paper-and-pencil game, it isn't much to look at graphically and it may give a rather boring impression of the game (even if you manage to figure out what to do with it).

For a cool visual presentation, check out some of these Youtube video's of various Battletech computer game intro movies:

Mechwarrior 4 Intro:

Mechcommander Intro:

These are kinda cheesy, but they give you a good idea of what Battletech is about.

The pencil-and-paper game is played with miniatures and maps and is a lot of fun. It's truly a gaming classic.
